Book Review: The Sleeping Warrior

The Sleeping Warrior? What’s that, you ask? Well, friends, it just happens to be a thrilling detective-come-fantasy adventure from author Sara Bain… and I’m not just saying that because I know her.

Ahem…The Sleeping Warrior tells the tale of Libby, an alcoholic 28-year-old London lawyer who is suddenly catapulted into the criminal underworld after she meets the dark, handsome and mysterious Gabriel Radley. Gabriel has no memory of who he but it becomes quickly apparent that a lot of people want him dead. With the body count rising, a serial killer on the loose and police, journalists and a fanatic cult hounding them at every juncture, Libby ends up having to trust Gabriel to survive - despite knowing nothing about him.

Libby was a great protagonist and I hope she appears in a sequel. Instead of being a cliché of the typical female heroine, Libby is much rougher around the edges. She drinks too much, has an ongoing affair with her boss and has a sharp, witty tongue. It makes her hilarious and more importantly, feel like a real person. Her cynicism also injects humour into a story that can be quite dark in places (I think Libby might be loosely based on the author…)

Moving on…this is a well rounded, well written novel from first time author, Sara Bain. There is definitely something in here for crime and fantasy fans alike. It gets 10/10 and can be bought here

Now I'm away before Sara comes back...
